Examen is a reflective practice that originated in the 15th century. It’s purpose is to help children and adults become more aware of the power that thankfulness, regret, and hope have in their lives. By focusing attention on life experiences, it encourages thoughtfulness and accountability as a way of life.
Originally a Christian practice, it can also be used to promote general spiritual awareness. Some children might find it a useful daily practice. Others might prefer to reflect once a week or at the end of each month. Here, we adapt it as a way to look back over the past year and forward into 2022.

An Examen is a time to look backward and forward.
First, we look back on what has happened in our lives over a period of time. Sometimes it is a short period, like a morning or a day. Sometimes it’s a longer period, like a week or a month. Today, we will look back over the last year.
Second, we look forward, imagining what the future will be like. We can imagine a little or a long way into the future. Today, you can decide how far into the future you will look.
Some people like to practice Examen with only their minds. Other people like to draw while they practice Examen. If you would like to draw, pause this recording and get whatever you need, then hit ‘play’ again. [pause]
